Important note: The body that you will see in the following videos is that of a white male. A white male body is an unjustly privileged body in this American culture; therefore, the story that this body tells is in no way normative for any other non-white, female, or non-gendered body. Your body's story is unique, powerful, and beautiful.

What is a spontaneous movement meditation?

It is movement that springs from the body spontaneously. It is not thought out, choreographed, or rehearsed. ShapeShifters create this movement in the moment much like jazz musicians create music and freestyle rappers create verbal phrases instantaneously on the spot. This movement is often in response to some external sound or physical environment or unseen energy source. All of these movement meditations below are in response to sound energy in the form of music.

Central to all of the movement that ShapeShifters create is the flow of energy- both from the energy flowing within and through the body and the ambient energy that surrounds the body in any given environment. Your body with its intelligence senses all of these energy sources and combines them to tell its story. Energy filled movement is the language that the body uses to tell that story.

The story that your body tells is based on all of what it remembers throughout your life. Because of its unique intelligence, it knows you better than your conscious mind. Your body also has in its cells the DNA that carries all of the experience of all organisms that have gone before it. It finds in both your remembered life and all preexisting life the movement to tell its story.

There is a place in your brain and a state of mind that allows your body to tell its story. That place is your preconscious mind. Unlike your conscious mind your preconscious mind can handle your true story. Your conscious mind is not capable of that kind of truth or awareness. Your preconscious mind is the place where your body lives and breaths and remembers and tells your story.

Spontaneous movement meditations benefit you, the mover/story teller, in a number of ways. Because these movement meditations are not choreographed or thought out, the movement allows you to relive those significant elements of your remembered life rather than perform some mentally made up, stale and empty movement. It is movement filled with the immediate energy flowing both from within your body and from its surrounding environment. This relived movement has the power, clarity, and beauty to heal you and those who watch.

Spontaneous movement meditations are forms of art, therapy, and meditation. You may find all three of these forms present in you movement meditations or not. Fundamentally, intentional movement is a form of art meant to communicate something to other bodies. Movement is the most powerful way to communicate with other bodies. It is the energy that flows between our bodies and that is perceived by our preconscious minds that allows this to happen. Our conscious minds are not capable of this kind of communication and comprehension. This, then, is a form of art. Secondly, as our spontaneous movement relives  what our bodies remember, we release the energy has been trapped in those places of trauma. We are healed in the process. This is therapy. And finally because spontaneous movement forces us to be totally present in each moment as we respond to and embrace all that is within us and around us without judgment, we meditate.
