What is a musical or rap phrase?
A musical phrase is a lot like a sentence: “The dog ran into the street”. It has a complete thought or description; it has a beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes it has a feeling of being finished. Pop music usually has 8 or 16 bar phrases. Rap phrases often have a rhythmic or rhymed patterns that get repeated. These short phrases often make up a larger phrase.
Movement is also made up of phrases. As your body moves, it creates phrases and then sentences. You can move with these musical and rap phrases or you can move through them or against them. Your body responds to these phrases as a partner. The energy coming through these phrases merges with your body’s energy and you create a third flow of energy.
