Where can I do my spontaneous movement meditations?
You can do your spontaneous movement meditations any place. The best place to do your daily movement meditations is a place that is easily accessible at any time and allows you enough space to move. If you have a living room that allows you about 8’ x 8’ in which to move, that would be great. But learn to move in almost any space big or small, inside or outside, quiet or noisy. Each space will contain its own energy webs that you can see, touch, smell, and hear. Allow your body to absorb them and respond to them.
The surface on which you move can also vary greatly. All surfaces have their own kind of energy that your body can use to generate its own movement. As long as you meet the surface and do not fight it or move in fear of it, it will share its energy with your body. Sense an energy flow between your body and the surface. Your body and the surface that you are moving on are part of one energy flow and your movement is part of that singular flow. One way to connect with your surface is to lay flat on your back or front and image yourself as a puddle of water on that surface. Allow your body to flow over the surface and sink into it, to merge with it into one new flow of energy.
If you tend to move in the same space regularly, challenge yourself at times to move in environments and spaces that are not typical “dance spaces”. If there are physical objects in a space, include them in your movement story. Allow their energy and form to flow into your body and help shape the movement that comes out.
